Pressemitteilung

Press release
The drawn invitation card to salat salat...die sonne scheint
[salad salad...the sun is shining] presents a scattered
collection of figural-looking artifacts: pedestal-shaped structures crowned
with circles. By means of selective additions (eyes and mouths), Martin
Städeli defines these circles as heads and the arrangements
become anthropomorphic entities.
Other drawings by the artist are more about movement and contact –
for example, when bird-like creatures break up their closed torso formations
by flapping their wings or when larger figures attend to smaller ones.
Being seen and perceived seems to be the order of the day – but
has in fact long been an important subject in Städeli's art. Thus,
many of the sculptural works the artist is showing in his current exhibition
return the viewers' gazes – often from more than one face.
In addition, many of the plant-like structures rising from the ground
feature cylindrical forms, or cardboard tubes of varying lengths, which
serve as stable starting points for a variety of sculptural forms. It
is these basic elements that appear in the drawings as elongated blocks,
tied-up packages, ladders, or brick chimneys.
Analogous to his graphic creations, the juxtaposition of singular objects/beings
also plays a role in Städeli's sculptural works – which are
about establishing contact and “family constellations“, about
taking over and “populating“ the (gallery) space, but also
about accumulations that dissolve, undergo a process of individuation,
or successively disintegrate into individual settings.
In addition to these sociological aspects, anthropological viewpoints
also emerge. The transition from the creaturely to the human does not
only resonate motivically in drawn monkeys or (equally column-like towering)
meerkats, but already plays a role in a fundamental way in the organics
of the sculptural work, where by means of the papier-mâché
technique something concretely formed and solidified is born out of something
liquid.
Additional fields of meaning are opened up by the title of the exhibition
– a laconic saying, an erratic joke in a kind of haiku form. The
motif of the shapelessly sprawling head of lettuce serves as a metaphor
for a chaotic, undirected creative dynamic that the artist has to deal
with despite his general use of a logic that clearly operates with a focus
on horizontals and verticals. The tensions of opposing forces, which lead
to the work of art in the first place, also reveal themselves directly
within the artist's creations, which seem to be, at the same time, stable
and frail – and whose forms of existence, oscillating between air
and earth, are inscribed with a mischievous form of dignity.
