Die Ausstellung Preto Velho des kanadisch/guatemaltekischen Künstlers
Romeo Gongora zeigt Fotografien und zwei Videoarbeiten (eine Dokumentation
und ein Spielfilm). Der Dokumentarfilm zeigt ein Umbanda Ritual, einer
brasilianischen Glaubensrichtung, die afrikanische Religionen mit dem
Katholizismus verbindet. Der Spielfilm erzählt, inspiriert von Tableaux
vivants („Lebende Bilder“) aus der brasilianischen Kolonialzeit
des 19. Jahrhunderts, die Geschichte eines alten Sklaven, der zu Unrecht
angeklagt sterben muss. Beide Filme entstanden in enger Zusammenarbeit
mit der brasilianischen Filmemacherin Rosa Berardo.

The exhibition consists in photographs and two video work (a documentary
and a fiction film). The documentary film show an Umbanda ritual, a Brazilian
religion that blends African religions with Catholicism. The fiction film
presents in tableaux-vivants, inspired by 19 century brazilian colonial
watercolors, the story of an old slave who died for unjust indictment.
These works are made in collaboration with Rosa Berardo, a Brazilian film
director.

Romeo Gongora (Canada/Guatemala) is a visual artist active
internationally. His work explore the questions of representation and
the perception of difference. In 2005 he completed a Master’s degree
in visual and media art at UQAM. He is the recipient of several grants
and has shown his work at the Kin Art Studio (Kinshasa), the Musée
d'art contemporain de Montréal, Galerie de l’UQAM (Montreal),
Centre d'art contemporain OPTICA (Montreal), Centre de diffusion et de
production de la photographie VU (Quebec City), Gallery 44 (Toronto) and
Centre de photographies actuelles DAZIBAO (Montreal), among others. Recently,
he was invited to work at Aux Recollets (Paris), Centro de la Imagen (Mexico
City) and at Centre Culturel de Neumünster (Luxembourg). In 2007,
he took up a two-year residence at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten
(Amsterdam) and, in 2009, he represented Canada as an artist in residence
at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin).

Rosa Berardo (Brazil), Ph.D. in cinema by Sorbonne, France
and Post-Ph.D. by University of Quebec in Montreal, has a long way in
the audio-visual area and Cultural Studies by directing many documentary
films about ethnical groups and popular cultures, attending several cinema
festivals in Brazil and abroad as manager in Locarno, Clermont Ferrant,
Serra da Estrela /PT, Barcelona - Spain, and also as jury, in Portugal
and in Brazil. In the photography field she produced a series of national
and international exhibitions. Her name is reported in the Women’s
Virtual Library (www.bibliotecavirtual.com.br) as one of the Brazilian
female artists that most distinguished herself in arts in the last years.
In July, 2007 she was honored with the highest cultural field decoration
in the State of Goiás: the Anhanguera Badge, given by the Governor’s
own hands, Alcides Rodrigues, in the city of Goiás.
